SHAKESPEARE'S THEATER

BLACK THEATER

Caroline Jackson Smith, Oberlin College Associate Professor of Theater and African American Studies, examines the evolution of black theater during the Harlem Renaissance from Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle's Broadway hit SHUFFLE ALONG to Langston Hughes's LITTLE HAM. Robert Hethmon, editor of STRASBERG AT THE ACTORS STUDIO, explores the People's Theaters and The Group Theatre, including Clifford Odets' hits GOLDEN BOY and WAITING FOR LEFTY in THE GRAPES OF WRATH AND THE AMERICAN DREAM. Lorraine Brown, associate director of the Research Center for Federal Theater at George Mason University, examines the extraordinary successes of the WPA Federal Theater Project under the leadership of Hallie Flanagan, from LIVING NEWSPAPERS to FRANKIE AND JOHNNY, IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, SWING MIKADO and VOODOO MACBETH. Stars who came out of the Federal Theater Project include Orson Welles, John Houseman, Joseph Cotton, Joseph Losey, and Burt Lancaster, who performed in the Federal Circus.
